Mortared Walls are often built in situations where a the look of permanence and precision are desired. They are constructed on top of excavated and poured concrete/rebar footings, adaquate to carry the load of the wall. Often, masonry walls will only be "facing" walls which are built over existing masonry or prepared material such as a cement blocks, or a poured retaining wall. The stonework usually varies in depth from 1 to 8 inches and the aesthetic designs are limitless. Mortared walls with footings can be very strong, but have a very small tolerance for shifting ground and heavy frost action which could crack the masonry if severe enough.
