Dry Stacked walls are often built when there is some degree of a natural slope to retain or terrace. These walls are usually constructed without concrete footings, use gravel, soil and rubble stone for backfill, and will tend to settle and shift over time. This is usually desirable in situations where pouring a footing is not appropriate, where exact wall height tolerances are not as crucial, and where long lengths of wall are built. Additionally, dry stacked walls have a very natural look that is hard to emulate with mortared walls |
